Intimacy and otherness, inside and outside, participation and voyeurism, Caroline Cramer's (b. 1999) paintings oscillate between these poles. Based on photographs that are first translated into drawings and then into paintings, the artist creates large-format works that depict her closest confidants and give us an intimate insight into the Cramers life.
The female body and its depiction is a central motif in Cramer's work. Through the cropped depiction of body parts, the painter allows us to question the perception of women's bodies in art, which is shaped by the male gaze, and shows how an intimate moment can be captured on canvas without sexualizing those depicted.
